the mortal instruments – book #3 cassandra clare

“I don’t even want to want anyone but you.”

“i belong to you. you could do anything you wanted with me and i would let you. you could ask anything of me and i’d break myself trying to make you happy.”

this book is my second favourite in TMI. i’ll now give a summary of it. (gosh it’s such a rollercoaster)

remember how the second book ending with a mysterious woman named madeleine telling clary she knew how to wake her mother, jocelyn up? well, the only way that can be done is by finding the warlock ragnor fell. he’s been alive for like a thousand years – literally. he wants to help clary out. mostly because he is in good terms with the fairchilds. and so clary plans on going to idris (the hometown of all shadowhunters) in order to find fell. jace doesn’t want clary to go and wants to convince simon to argue clary out of going. just as they’re having this argument in front of the portal jace will step through (to go to idris), forsaken warriors (possesed shadowhunters under the command of valentine) attack them. simon gets injured and jace instantly pulls him into the portal (which isn’t a very great movie considering the fact that simon’s a vampire.) they leave clary out in the middle of all the chaos (which is very convenient for jace.) she then creates a portal with her special rune-making power, and steps through it with luke, her stepdad. the only issue is that her portal making hasn’t been perfected yet, and so they fall into lake lynn. it’s healing for some creatures but not shadowhunters. clary gets it in her mouth and starts choking, blacking out. luke takes her to amatis’ (his sister) house outside of idris, and she’s told to stay out of idris since she isn’t there legally. after some time, she’s taken to the penhallow’s mansion and there she meets sebastian & another girl. she instantly feels this strange connection to sebastian. however, she quickly forgets about it when she walks in on jace making out with another girl. jace gets furious about clary coming to idris and quickly sends her away. but obviously clary doesn’t listen. when sebastian tells her that he could take her to ragnor, she jumps on the offer. unfortunately, they find out that ragnor has been murdered by valentine a few hours ago (sad). but instead, they come across magnus bane; the high (& hottest) warlock of brooklyn. he tells them that there’s a spell that could help them, but it’s hidden inside a book that’s inside valentine’s house. so yeah, it’s a bit of a death mission. but we all know someone who’s in love with the idea of dying (cough*apartfromwillherondale*cough): no one other than jace herondale. they go to their daddy’s house and find an actual angel there that had been imprisoned by valentine for many years. the angel shows clary some images before showing her how they can free him. he shows how jace was fed demon blood before he was born. and they both fall silent as they realised jace is part demon. once they do, the angel kills himself.

“it explains… why i feel the way i do about you.”

they then return to idris, only to find it in flames. it’s not supposed to happen but somehow demons have gotten into idris and they’re wrecking the whole place down. a lot of people die and luke then suggests (as the head of the werewolves in the court) that downworlders and shadowhunters make an alliance. the idea is not very appreciated until clary tells them that she knows a rune to combine pairs of downworlders and shadowhunters to be extra powerful. as the city prepares for a battle, jace goes off to find valentine. when he does find him, he’s confronted by sebastian. he tells him that valentine isn’t jace’s biological father. (*the whole fandom takes a deep sigh of relief*) he’s some other shadowhunter’s son that valentine fed an elixir to. and sebastian then tells him that he’s actually valentine’s biological son, and that he was given demon blood before his birth (unlike jace who was given angel blood through the elixir.) they have a massive sibling-ish fight, and sebastian dies. (oh well) while jace fights for his life, clary suddenly realizes what valentine’s plans are, and she opens a portal to lake lynn. she sees valentine there, calling upon raziel (their angel) with the mortal instruments. jace arrives before valentine can complete the ritual. they fight and valentine kills jace. clary is shocked, so moved, frustrated and horrified that she finds the power inside herself to make a new rune. this shows her as the one who summoned raziel, therefore he’ll only accept a wish from her. he also kills valentine for being such a pain in the ass. clary wishes for the resurrection of jace.

“you could have had anything else in the world, and you asked for me.”

there are celebrations now that both sebastian & valentine is gone, and jocelyn & luke finally commit to one another. now that they know they’re not siblings, jace & clary commit to one another as well. happy ending. …right?

the mortal instruments – book #2 cassandra clare

please!

so the second book in this serie is City of Ashes. it’s a bit complicated, so you guys might wanna take a seat.

in the first book, clary’s mom is put into sleep & kidnapped by valentine morgenstern. clary then learns that this evil man who she hates & despises in the most extreme way possible is her father! yay!! also, valentine is the #1 villain in the shadowhunter world. his plan is to summon demons and create a world where there’s no joy, no love, no friendships, nothing. if you’ve ever seen that phineas & ferb episode where they go into this alternate universe and doofenshmirtz rules everything and everyone works in domestic labour and there are scary robots roaming around the streets, asking for id’s and hurting people, that’s it. he wants to be the doofenshmirtz of this world. he wants demons to roam the streets. and well, there’s a universe where that does exist (& it’s called Thule), but that’s a whole another thing. anyway, so valentine’s trying to summon demons. and not only are they dangerous enough, he’s trying to summon Agramon. the fricking FEAR DEMON. meanwhile, izzy, jace & alec return from a mission and find maryse (their mom) has returned from alicante (their hometown) in which she had been during the whole first book. maryse instantly gives jace the “you’re dead” look that ONLY moms can give and she asks for jace to swear that he’s loyal to them. she thinks jace is working for valentine, since HE’S ALSO HIS SON! (clary & jace as siblings! fun!!) when jace doesn’t swear because valentine’s still his dad, there are a few family crises. okay not a few. a LOT of MAJOR crises which even cause jace to run away. luke (clary’s stepdad who’s also the leader of a vampire clan) finds him and asks clary to talk some sense into him. she does and he returns back to the institute, next to maryse. maryse then calls the shadowhunter headquarters to come and get jace and then he’s locked down in a jail cell deep down the ground where there’s no light and the big colons everywhere are made of dead shadowhunter ashes. real classy move maryse. when people go there to rescue jace, they see that valentine has actually came there and got jace out. then they’re invited to Faerie by the Seelie Queen. all i can say is, everyone who has gone there deserves a “i survived my trip to Faerie!” tshirt. jace & clary are forced to share a kiss (supposed to be disgusting right?? oh well…), they also learn that they both have superpowers, simon turns into a vampire, they meet maia & raphael, they find out about valentine’s evil plan which contains getting the mortal sword & cup, summoning demons and having full control over them. uh-oh. they return back to the shadowhunter land where jace is imprisoned again and the inquisitor tries to make a deal which will probably involve getting jace killed 100%, doesn’t work, alec backs his ass (classic) and they get out. clary has learned that her superpower is creating new runes. that’s supposed to be impossible!! by this point, everyone’s been attacked by a demon for at least a hundred times and they FINALLY realise that valentine is the main enemy. they go to a boat in which valentine’s supposed to be, the war begins. clary creates a “fearless” rune which literally makes you fearless and a shit ton of things happen. simon dies (again), jace saves him, simon drinks his blood, BOOM. jace’s angel blood + simon = he is now a daylighter. he can go out in the sun. izzy fights demons off without getting anything on herself (the badassery!), alec backs jace’s ass while fighting, iratze’s are applied, clary and jace go after valentine, can’t find him. finally, clary makes a rune that sinks the whole fricking boat. the war has ended (for now), and valentine’s gone. again.

in the epilogue, jace tells clary that they’re sibling & can’t be messing around, and on the final page, there’s this mysterious woman called madelaine who calls herself jocelyn’s (clary’s mom’s) friend and says that she knows how to wake her up. boom the end.

okay so this book has definitely been INTENSE. so many cliffhangers, plot twists, wrong relationships that we can’t help but ship *cough*clace*cough*. it makes you want to get lost in the pages and you don’t even want to wait for a second after the book ends. it’s gripping, fluent and just straight up beautiful.

the mortal instruments – book #1 cassandra clare

okay. i don’t even know how to BEGIN with this one. let me just begin by giving a general “the shadowhunter chronicles” review. first of all, there are a couple of youtube videos explaining how you should read it or the suggested ways and stuff. i read the series based on one of the videos i watched, and i honestly kinda regret it. here’s the best order in my opinion.

  1. the mortal instruments (all 6 books at once)
  2. the infernal devices (3 books)
  3. the dark artifices (3 books)
There are some sites suggesting you should read it like TMI first 3 books then TID then the following 3 books from TMI. That’s the way I’ve read it and it doesn’t work well because you forget all about TMI and then the time period changes drastically and you just become confused. so trust me on this one. (oh but you can change the place of 1 & 2, just don’t divide the series)

onto the book review.

everything you’ve heard about monsters, about nightmares, legends whispered around campfires…

all the stories are true.

okay, if you’ve watched the tv series or the film, ERASE IT FROM YOUR BRAIN. i have nothing against the actors, they’re amazing but it’s SO not accurate. and it’s always better to picture it inside your head. with that being said, this book is an awesome beginning to the 12-booked-wild-ride Cassie will take you on. you’re exposed to the main characters jace herondale and clary fray. jace is a stuck-up meanie who has a pessimistic view toward life. the only people he cares about are his sister isabelle (izzy) and alec, despite all the girls that drool over him 24/7. he’s the best shadowhunter in his generation, and let me tell you he has EARNED it. clary is a smol bean who’s a badass when push comes to shove. she’s empowering, ready to fight anyone who dares to speak to her “like that”. but she also wants a career in art and is just turning 18 when her mom is attacked and she’s suddenly exposed to this different world where all the stories are true. where there are gay warlocks, hot shadowhunters, gruesome demons and grumpy vampires. her mission is to obviously save her mom, but on her journey, she unfolds many secrets, experiences a shit ton of new things and has around a thousand near death experiences.

i can’t tell more because nobody likes spoilers. but let me just tell you, cassie’s articulation, vocabulary, the depth of her characters, the backstories, cliffhangers, plot twists and just EVERYTHING. the story just captures, no wait, it fricking DEVOURS you and at some point you even forget you’re reading, everything appears in front of your very eyes and you don’t even realise you’re seeing words, you just know that you’re inside wherever cassandra clare wants you to be. this book is amazing. not only with the plot, but also with the talent of the writer. just seriously, go read it.
